¡Feliz año nuevo!
¿Es demasiado tarde? No me refiero a si es demasiado tarde para augurar un feliz año nuevo, sino demasiado tarde para que 2020 se convierta en un "año feliz". La catástrofe climática avanza a una velocidad increíble. Australia está ardiendo Se ha quemado un territorio equivalente a la superficie de Irlanda, se estima que en las llamas han muerto más de mil millones de animales, lo que lleva a muchas de las especies únicas de Australia más cerca de la extinción. Trump está acercando al mundo a la próxima guerra desastrosa. El régimen fascista en Turquía está lanzando una nueva intervención militar en Libia mientras continúa su guerra ilegal contra Rojava y apoya a decenas de miles de combatientes de las facciones Al-Qaida y Daesh. La Unión Europea prefiere callar y vender armas al régimen fascista turco y apoyar sus guerras criminales. La Unión Europea (Estados Unidos también...) prefiere apoyar la dictadura cristiano-fascista en Bolivia y el autoproclamado "presidente" de Venezuela Guiadog, que ya no cuenta ni con el apoyo de la oposición en Venezuela. Varios de los "ministros" y los "embajadores" que Guaidog "nombró" están siendo investigados por corrupción en Colombia y Estados Unidos, mientras que Guaidog está colaborando estrechamente con los paramilitares colombianos ... En tiempos de crisis, el centro y la burguesía apoyan y confían en el fascismo. Esta es una lección histórica. El centro no frena el ascenso del fascismo.
Parece casi lejano que el peronismo de centroizquierda ganó las elecciones presidenciales en Argentina enviando a casa al presidente neoliberal, autoritario y mafioso Macri; que el pueblo de Chile se levanta contra la falsa democracia neoliberal basada en la misericordia de Pinochet y la constitución de la dictadura; que levantamientos populares masivos sacudieron a Ecuador, Iraq, Líbano, Sudán, Colombia ...
"Don't belive the hype" rapeó Public Enemy hace muchos años. Todavía tienen razón. El hecho de que los principales medios no muestren algo no significa que no esté sucediendo. Los levantamientos en Chile y otros lugares continúan. Francia está paralizada por la huelga más larga de la historia contra Macron que intenta desmantelar el sistema de asistencia social a partir de una dura reforma de pensiones. El gobierno golpista fascista en Bolivia no controla todo el país. La victoria de centroizquierda en Argentina, junto al gobierno de centroizquierda en México ha cambiado el equilibrio geopolítico en América Latina (hay muchos otros problemas en ambos países con los gobiernos de centroizquierda que hacen que no hay razón para entusiasmarse...). Podría continuar la lista ...
Estamos en una guerra de clases global. Los ricos y poderosos lo declararon al mundo, su población y a la naturaleza. Tenemos que ganar. Por cualquier medio necesario. De lo contrario, la humanidad no tiene futuro.

Escuela de verano en la Universidad Duisburg Essen del 15 de junio al 25 de junio (lunes-jueves, 10-14 horas)
Enseñaré un curso en la escuela de verano de la Universidad DuE sobre "New Global Social Movements"
The course reviews major issues concerning new global social movements and their core characteristics. At the center of the course are the movements that emerged with the crisis since 2008 (the “Arab Spring,” Greece, 15-M/Spain, Gezi/Turkey, Occupy…). The course will discuss different approaches in social movement theory. It will also analyze movements that can be considered precursors regarding content and practices of the new global social movements (e.g. the “anti-representational” movements in Latin America since the mid-1990s and the alter-globalization movement). The course will discuss shared characteristics and differences among the new global movements and compared to earlier social movements. These changes will be contextualized in an analysis of changing political and cultural circumstances (crisis of representation, globalization, global governance…) and of new practices (non-representational democracy, direct action, self-management…) and perspectives of social movements.

"The Class Strikes Back" examines a number of radical, twenty-first-century workers’ struggles. These struggles are characterised by a different kind of unionism and solidarity, arising out of new kinds of labour conditions and responsive to new kinds of social and economic marginalisation. The essays in the collection demonstrate the dramatic growth of syndicalist and autonomist formations and argue for their historical necessity. They show how workers seek to form and join democratic and independent unions that are fundamentally opposed to bureaucratic leadership, compromise, and concessions.
Specific case studies dealing with both the Global South and Global North assess the context of local histories and the spatially and temporally located balance of power, while embedding the struggle in a broader picture of resistance and the fight for emancipation.

„(…) Chávez and the social transformation process in Venezuela rapidly gained strong sympathies among social movements and the radical left throughout the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region; for the same reasons, Venezuela came to be the number-one enemy of the Latin American right and the United States, which supported several attempts to overthrow the government. After Chávez’s death in 2013, his successor, Nicolás Maduro, faced an increasingly violent opposition, a severe economic crisis, growing hostility from the United States and the European Union (EU), and a regional context in which the rise of right-wing governments reversed the “pink tide.” Since early 2019, the situation has escalated because of sanctions by the U.S. and EU countries; the recognition of a self-proclaimed “interim president” belonging to the opposition, by the United States, most EU countries, and the right-wing governments in Latin America; coup attempts; and the open threat of U.S. military intervention. Online platforms have disrupted parts of the capitalist economy, with allegedly severe consequences in the world of work. This study examines live music in Germany and the UK, where online platforms do not dominate, despite considerable digitalization of market intermediaries. The analysis shows that, as the degree of digitalization increases, matching services tend to work less as a workers representative which is traditionally the case for live music agents and more as a force of marketization that disciplines workers by orchestrating price-based competition.

Ein grundlegendes Merkmal der liberalen Demokratie ist, dass demokratische Entscheidungsfindung aus den meisten Bereichen des Lebens aus- geschlossen bleibt. Liberalismus und Demokratie galten über Jahrhunderte hinweg als unvereinbare Gegensätze. Erst die Beschränkung der Demokratie auf die politische Sphäre machte sie für Liberale akzeptabel und führte zur Entstehung der liberalen Demokratie. Damit ist ein für die meisten Menschen zentraler und prägender Bereich des Lebens, die Arbeit, von der demokratischen Entscheidungsfindung ausgeschlossen. Dies ist kaum Gegenstand aktueller Debatten, leider auch nicht in der Linken. Dabei ist die Geschichte voll von Beispielen, in denen Arbeiter*innen ihre Betriebe übernommen haben, um sie in Selbstverwaltung weiterzuführen. Dies geschah manchmal im grossen Massstab, verknüpft mit dem Versuch einer gesamtgesellschaftlichen Umwälzung, manchmal im kleinen Massstab als Betriebsbesetzungen und Genossenschaftsgründungen.

The socialist government that the late President Hugo Chavez brought to power in Venezuela 20 years ago is still standing, despite the efforts of three US presidents to overthrow it. Dario Azzelini is a visiting fellow at the Latin American Studies Program, at Cornell University. He’s an Italian who was raised in Germany and lived for years in a poor barrio in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. Azzelini wrote a book, titled, “Communes and Workers' Control in Venezuela,” in which he argues that workers and peasants are building socialism from below in that country. We asked him why the right-wing has not been able to mount a successful coup against the Venezuelan government, despite crippling US sanctions and total support for regime change from the American media and the two corporate political parties.

"Occupy, Resist, Produce - Scop Ti" / A film by Dario Azzellini and Oliver Ressler. 34 min. / English or German subtitles.
Scop Ti is located in the small town Gémenos near Marseille, in Southern France. The plant belonged to Lipton (Unilever) and produced herbal and fruit teas and the 120-year-old local French black tea brand Thé de l’Éléphant. In September 2010 Unilever decided to relocate production and machines to Poland, closed the plant and left 182 workers without their jobs. The workers immediately occupied their workplace, supported by the union CGT. Initially all 182 workers participated in the occupation; after three years 76 were still active. They demanded from Unilever to get the factory, the machines and the brand name Thé de l’Éléphant. They planned to build a cooperative, switch production to natural and organic herbal teas using mainly regional products.

"Se trata de la humanidad"
Desde el 9 de octubre, Turquía, el segundo ejército más grande de la OTAN, ha estado llevando a cabo una guerra de agresión contra Rojava junto con las milicias islámicas de Al-Qaida y el estado islámico. El objetivo es la anexión del territorio. El objetivo es el genocidio y la expulsión de la población predominantemente kurda, pero también asiria, cristiana, yezidí y árabe. Las SDF multiétnicas, lideradas por combatientes kurdos, derrotó casi por completo al estado islámico (Daesh), dejando más de 11,000 bajas en sus propias filas.
En Rojava, se estableció el único modelo de convivencia multiétnico y multirreligioso en toda la región. La democracia básica y la igualdad de derechos para las mujeres caracterizan la autoadministración. Turquía y sus aliados defienden la guerra, la expulsión, el genocidio, la intolerancia, el racismo y el autoritarismo. Hoy, Erdogan quiere hacer retroceder la rueda de la historia. Turquía no oculta el hecho de que sueña con el antiguo Imperio Otomano.
El futuro de toda una región se decide en Rojava. Si logra su plan en Rojava, no se detendrán allí. En Rojava y en todo el mundo tenemos que oponernos a esta guerra. Se trata de la humanidad".

Roberto Sirvent: How can your book help BAR readers understand the current political and social climate?
Dario Azzellini: The book counters the international, and especially US propaganda against Venezuela. It does not only counter the right-wing propaganda. It does also counter the focus of many leftists on government policies only. It shows that in Venezuela – beyond any critique you might have of government policies – there are millions of people on the ground building day by day socialism from below by building structures of self-government, planning according to their needs, taking over underperforming or abandoned land and companies from private owners and from state institutions. The mainstream media, and even many people considering themselves leftists, cannot understand why the Maduro government is still in power and could not be toppled by the economic and financial sanctions, terrorist attacks and political pressure set up by US imperialism, its ultra-right-wing allies in the region such as Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, and the European Union." „Proteste, Aufstände und Regierungswechsel in Lateinamerika und der Karibik: In Ecuador hat eine Revolte gegen die IWF-Politik die Regierung vorerst zum Einlenken gezwungen. In Haiti tobt ein Aufstand gegen die US-gestützte Regierung. In Chile protestieren und streiken Millionen für ein Ende der neoliberalen Politik, den Rücktritt des rechten Präsidenten und Milliardärs Sebastián Piñera und eine neue Verfassung. Honduras und Panama erleben ebenfalls Massenproteste. In Kolumbien finden Proteste statt, ein Teil der ehemaligen FARC-Guerilla hat sich wieder bewaffnet und bei den Lokal- und Regionalwahlen Ende Oktober verlor die extrem rechte Partei des Ex-Präsidenten Álvaro Uribe auf breiter Front. In Bolivien siegte der seit 2006 regierende Evo Morales in der ersten Runde. Die Opposition wirft der Regierung Wahlbetrug vor und mobilisiert für ihren Sturz. In Venezuela blieb der Aufstand aus, trotz Krise und ökonomischer Blockade, trotz der Beschlagnahmung von venezolanischen Auslandsgeldern und der Anerkennung eines selbsternannten Präsidenten durch USA und EU.“

„Communes and Workers’ Control in Venezuela combines an examination of the experiences of grassroots bodies involved in neighborhood and workplace decision-making with theoretical analysis of the role of state institutions in the transition to socialism. The author champions “the idea of a communal socialism” (54), while detailing the ways that the old state’s bureaucracy during the presidencies of Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro has impeded the full development of a new state based on popular participation. Azzellini points to the “centrality of territory in the Venezuelan struggle” and adds that “the most active agent of change” in the nation has been barrio and rural inhabitants. In contrast, industrial workers are “frequently privileged” and have largely been led by corrupt trade unionists “co-opted by the political system,” while “the building of workers councils” has proven to be particularly “difcult” (32).“

„In den letzten Monaten wurde in linken Kreisen wieder verstärkt über weltweite Aufstände diskutiert. Der Anlass waren anhaltende Massenproteste auf den verschiedenen Kontinenten. Da werden Proteste in Hongkong, Irak, Iran, Ecuador, Chile Libanon schnell aneinandergereiht. Dabei besteht die Gefahr, dass die jeweiligen Besonderheiten der Proteste in den Hintergrund treten. Zudem fällt die fast völlige Abwesenheit der ArbeiterInnenklasse in der medialen Berichterstattung über die .….
.…. Proteste auf. Da verdient ein Buch von Dario Azzellini mehr Aufmerksamkeit, dass er unter dem Titel „Vom Protest zum sozialen Prozess“ im VSA-Verlag herausgegeben hat. Auf knapp 150 Seiten hat Azzellini einen guten Überblick über die selbstverwalteten Betriebe in Frankreich, Italien, Griechenland, Brasilien, Argentinien, Venezuela, Ex-Jugoslawien, den USA, der Türkei und Ägypten gegeben. (Am Rande erwähnt wird auch Thüringen: 2007 gab es in Nordhausen das kurzlebige Projekt „Strike Bike“ – Fahrradproduktion in Belegschaftshand).“

„Von der Krise führt kein direkter Weg in den Sozialismus. Gleichwohl können bestimm- te selbstorganisierte Lösungswege aus der Krise heraus eine andere Welt vorscheinen lassen. Dies gilt besonders für »rückeroberte Betriebe« unter der Kontrolle der Arbeiter, die Dario Azzellini in seinem Buch »Vom Protest zum sozialen Prozess« beschreibt. In der Krise wurden die Fabriken von ihren Besitzern geschlossen, verlagert oder ver- lassen. Die Arbeiter besetzten sie, um die weitere Ausplünderung, eine Abfindungszahlung oder die Schließung zu verhindern. Die Besetzung ist jeweils eine Reaktion auf eine Krise, eine not- gedrungene Strategie in der Defensive. Eine Produktion unter Arbeiterkontrolle war in den wenigsten Fällen das ursprüngliche Ziel. ein solches Vorhaben entwickelte sich erst nach vielen Gesprächen, Versammlungen und zum Teil durch Unterstützung von anderen betroffenen Arbeitern.“
