Occupied Greek Factory Begins Production Under Workers Control

“We see this as the only future for worker’s struggles.”

Tuesday, February 12, 2013 is the official first day of production under workers control in the factory of Viomichaniki Metalleutiki (Vio.Me) in Thessaloniki, Greece. This means production organized without bosses and hierarchy, and instead planned with directly democratic assemblies of the workers. The workers assemblies have declared an end to unequal division of resources, and will have equal and fair remuneration, decided collectively. The factory produces building materials, and they have declared that they plan to move towards a production of these goods that is not harmful for the environment, and in a way that is not toxic or damaging.

Buchbesprechung: Die endlich entdeckte politische Form von Christian Frings

Dass nun auf Englisch und Deutsch eine weitere breit angelegte Textsammlung zu Fabrikräten und Selbstverwaltung erschienen ist, deutet auf das in der tiefen Jahrhundertkrise des Kapitalismus wiedererwachte Interesse an Alternativen zur profitorientierten Produktion hin, und es scheint auch kein Zufall zu sein, dass im letzten Teil des Buches zu Erfahrungen aus der Zeit 1990 bis 2010 die Beispiele aus Lateinamerika im Mittelpunkt stehen. Vor allem die praktischen Versuche der Übernahme der Produktion durch ArbeiterInnen in Argentinien sind – nicht erst durch Naomi Kleins Film The Take – weltweit zu einem Symbol für die Möglichkeit von Arbeiterselbstverwaltung geworden.

Die Wahl diverser Mitte-Links und linker Regierungen in Lateinamerika in den vergangenen 15 Jahren und die aktuellen Friedensgespräche zwischen der FARC-Guerilla und der kolumbianischen Regierung haben der Frage, ob denn der bewaffnete Kampf in Lateinamerika für die Linke noch eine Option darstelle, wieder Aktualität verliehen. Die Frage taucht seit Jahrzehnten mit aller Regelmäßigkeit wieder auf. So wurde der bewaffnete Kampf in Lateinamerika nach dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion für obsolet erklärt und den kolumbianischen Guerillagruppen wurde damals ein rasches Ende, aufgelöst im Sog der Geschichte, vorausgesagt.
